Humberto Fontova was born in the Cuban capital of Havana. In 1961, he and his five-member family sought to flee, but only four of them were successful. Humberto's father was imprisoned at La Cabana, the central firing squad where 2100 men and boys were killed. After three months, Humberto Sr. was liberated and returned to his family in New Orleans.

Humberto was born and raised in New Orleans. He earned a Political Science degree from the University of New Orleans. Tulane University awarded him a master's degree in Latin American Studies. The Helldivers' Rodeo, an intense scuba diving and spearfishing trip was his debut book, published in 2001.
