About Harold Holzer
Harold Holzer Biography
Harold Holzer is a renowned scholar on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era in the United States. He is co-chairman of the United States Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and a prolific writer and lecturer who appears frequently on television. The Lincoln Image, Lincoln Seen and Heard, Dear Mr. Lincoln: Letters to the President, Lincoln as I Knew Him, and Lincoln on Democracy are among the thirty volumes he has written, co-authored, or edited about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. His most latest book, Lincoln President-Elect (October 2008), analyses the four months among Lincoln's election and commencement when he rebuffed negotiations pressured on him by Republicans and Democrats, Northerners and Southerners, that would have preserved the Union for a little longer but would have enshrined slavery. The renowned Lincoln Prize was awarded to his book Lincoln At Cooper Union: The Speech That Made Abraham Lincoln President (2004). Holzer has been on The Today Show, The Charlie Rose Show, CNBC, Fox News, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, C-Washington Span's Journal, and CBS Sunday Morning, among other shows. His theatre productions Lincoln Seen and Heard with Sam Waterston and Grant Seen and Heard with Richard Dreyfuss were also shown on C-SPAN. At The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Holzer is the Senior Vice President for External Affairs. During Governor Mario M. Cuomo's administration, he served as Special Counselor to the Director of Economic Development and executive vice president of The New York State Urban Development Corporation from 1984 to 1992. Holzer is the founding vice-chairman and a frequent presenter at The Lincoln Forum, which holds an annual conference in Gettysburg each year, and is a member of the Ulysses S. Grant Association's Board of Directors. He also serves on the board of historical advisors for the Mariners' Museum's U.S.S. Monitor Center in Newport News, Virginia; the Tredegar National Civil War Center Foundation in Richmond; the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia; and the new Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania.
