Gil Eyal Biography

Gil Eyal is a sociology professor at Columbia University in New York City. He is also the chair of Columbia's Department of Sociology, a post he has held since 2014. Eyal's work spans sociological studies on science, medicine, professions, intellectuals, and knowledge, particularly as they connect with political and legal structures. Eyal refers to this subject as the sociology of expertise, and he is interested not just in what scientists and professionals do, but also in how ordinary people, referred to as "lay experts," build together innovative kinds of expertise. Currently, Eyal is working to understand the reasons and dimensions of today's expert mistrust, such as attempts to throw doubt on climate science conclusions, parental unwillingness to vaccinate their children, and economic professionals' disdain of sober judgments (e.g. at the time of the Brexit debate). These are the issues covered in his 2019 book The Crisis of Expertise. Eyal, who received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1997, is the author of several works on topics ranging from autism to the Israeli state to post-communist elites in Eastern Europe. Eyal was an associate professor at UC-Berkeley from 1997 to 2002 before becoming an associate professor and subsequently a tenured professor at Columbia.
