General Sir Mike Jackson Biography

Sir General Mike Jackson has had an extraordinarily distinguished military career spanning almost 45 years – from officer cadet to Chief of the General Staff the highest level of the British Army. In this role Jackson commanded the British Army during the war in Iraq from 2003-2006. He has commanded on operations at almost every level in Northern Ireland Bosnia and Kosovo. Jackson has served in numerous parts of the world from the arctic to the jungle.
General Jackson began his career in the Intelligence Corps in 1963 specializing in Russian Studies. He then transferred to the Parachute Regiment in the early 1970s and served in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
He commanded 1st Battalion The Parachute Regiment from 1984 to 1986. Throughout his period of command the Battalion was part of the NATO Allied Command Europe Mobile Force. He returned to Northern Ireland in late 1989 to command 39 Infantry Brigade for two and a half years. From 1992 through 1993 he served as in the Director General Personnel Services (Army) for the Ministry of Defence.
