Gayle E. Smith is the ONE Campaign's President and CEO. She has worked as a senior development counselor to two American presidents and is regarded as one of the world's foremost authorities on global development. She provides unrivaled knowledge in development and democratic concerns, as well as a vast network of contacts across the African continent and beyond the world. Smith most recently served as Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development, where she oversaw a staff of over 10,000 people dedicated to ending extreme poverty, fostering sustained and inclusive economic growth, and promoting resilient, democratic societies around the world. Smith formerly worked as President Obama's special assistant and senior director for development and democracy at the National Security Council, as well as President Clinton's special assistant and senior director for African affairs at the National Security Council. Smith created the Center for American Progress's sustainable security program before joining the NSC, and she also co-launched the ENOUGH project and the Modernizing Foreign Assistance Network. She has also worked as a journalist and with non-governmental organizations in Africa for over 20 years. Smith is originally from Bexley, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Colorado with a B.A.
