President Cardoso was elected to the Brazilian Senate from the state of Sao Paulo in 1986 and helped form the Social Democratic party two years later. President Cardoso, a prominent Latin American sociologist, is presently a professor-at-large at Brown University's Thomas J. Watson Jr. Institute for International Studies.
