Elliott Abrams Biography
Elliott Abrams is the United States Department of State's Special Representative for Venezuela. He is now on leave from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in Washington, DC, where he was a senior fellow for Middle Eastern studies. He was deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor in President George W. Bush's administration, where he oversaw US strategy in the Middle East for the White House. Mr. Abrams attended Harvard College, the London School of Economics, and the Harvard Law School. He worked on the staffs of Senators Henry M. Jackson and Daniel P. Moynihan before becoming an assistant secretary of state in the Reagan administration, where he earned the secretary of state's Distinguished Service Award from Secretary George P. Shultz. In 2012, he received the Scholar-Statesman Award from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. From 1996 to his appointment to the White House staff, Mr. Abrams was president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, DC. He was a member of the United States Panel on International Religious Freedom from 1999 to 2001, and head of the commission in the latter year. He was a member of the Commission again from 2012 to 2014. Mr. Abrams served on the US Holocaust Memorial Council, which oversees the activities of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, from 2009 until 2016. He is on the National Endowment for Democracy's board of directors and teaches US international policy at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. In June 2001, Mr. Abrams joined the Bush administration as special assistant to the president and senior director of the National Security Council for democracy, human rights, and international organizations. He was special assistant to the president and senior director of the National Security Council for Near East and North African issues from December 2002 to February 2005. From February 2005 to January 2009, he was the deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor for global democracy strategy, supervising both the Near East and North African affairs and the National Security Council's democracy, human rights, and international organizations directorates. Undue Process; Security and Sacrifice; Faith or Fear: How Jews Can Survive in a Christian America; Tested by Zion: The Bush Administration and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict; and, most recently, Realism and Democracy: American Foreign Policy After the Arab Spring are among Abrams' five books. Close Calls: Intervention, Terrorism, Missile Defense, and “Just War” Today, Honor Among Nations: Intangible Interests and Foreign Policy, and The Influence of Faith: Religious Groups and U.S. Foreign Policy are his other books. He speaks French and Spanish fluently.
