Drew Altman Biography

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation's President and CEO are Drew Altman. Drew Altman has reshaped the Kaiser Family Foundation into a major force in health policy and health services, not only in the United States but throughout the world, after establishing a track record of remarkable accomplishment in both the private and public sectors, according to fellow NASI member Bruce Vladeck. “While Kaiser's finances are small in comparison to the other big health-care foundations, its effect is unparalleled.” Altman joined the Foundation in 1991 and oversaw a thorough revamp of the organization's purpose and operational style at the time. He was the former Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Human Services under Governor Tom Kean (1986-1989). Altman was formerly the Director of the Pew Charitable Trusts' Health and Human Services department. From 1981 to 1986, he was Vice President of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and during the Carter Administration, he held a top post in the Health Care Financing Administration. He got his B.A. from Brandeis University and his Master's in Political Science from Brown University. He is a founder member of NASI. Before going into public service, he received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, performed post-doctoral work at the Harvard School of Public Health, and taught graduate courses in Public Policy at MIT. Altman is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Medicine.
