Dr. Vint Virga Biography

Dr. Virga has been a prominent practitioner and leader in veterinary medicine for over twenty-five years, noted for his insights on our relationships with animals. His knowledge ranges from household animals to wild species such as leopards, gibbons, wolves, and giraffes. He has significant experience working with dogs and cats as the founder and CEO of Veterinary Healing Arts, and he presently acts as a consultant to zoos and wild animal parks on the behavioral well-being and management of animals in their care. Dr. Virga, a recognized expert on animal behavior and a prominent advocate for the human-animal bond, has spoken at hundreds of private corporations, nonprofit foundations, colleges and universities, zoos and wild animal parks, libraries, and conferences, including Disney's Animal Kingdom, Chicago's Brookfield Zoo, Cornell University, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. He is well-known for his insights on the similarities between human and animal behavior, which he uses to make animal behavior understandable, relevant, and simple to grasp. Outside of clinical practice, he has worked as an advisor to major U.S. companies, professional groups, and animal welfare organizations; as a veterinarian liaison to the U.S. Congress; and as an expert on legal and legislative problems pertaining to animal health and welfare. Dr. Virga's work demonstrates a rare sensitivity and compassion for both people and animals. His book, The Soul of All Living Creatures, won the Nautilus Silver Book Award in 2014. Dr. Virga earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California, Davis, and then went on to finish his clinical residency in behavioral medicine at Cornell University. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and is board qualified in veterinary behavior. Dr. Virga with his wife, daughter, and two Norwegian forest cats live in southern New England.
