On June 19, 1986, two days after being picked by the Boston Celtics, the University of Maryland basketball player died as a result of a heroin overdose. On December 4, 1990, the Bias family experienced yet another tragedy when their second son, Jay, was slain in a drive-by shooting at a nearby mall. Dr.

Bias utilizes the deaths of her two boys to inspire and motivate both children and adults. She carries with her a Message of Hope. This message addresses future hope, survival skills for the next century, adversity, humanity, loving oneself, and laying strong foundations.

Her objective is to assist in educating the nation's kids, families, and communities in developing positive attitudes toward themselves and others, which will lead to a more rich life for all. Dr. Bias thinks that our families, adolescents, and communities are accessible, teachable, loving, and saveable, and that we need to modify our approach to meeting their needs. Dr.

Bias has given speeches to state leaders, community and religious groups, the military, colleges, and private and governmental institutions. She has been awarded the keys to a number of cities and has appeared on a number of television shows, including ESPN's Close Up with Roy Firestone, Sally Jesse Rafael, Dr. Robert Schuller, The CBS Morning News, and the 700 Club.

She has also won a number of honors, including the Boston Herald Community Service Award, the International Women of Leadership Award, the Sojourner Truth Award, the Soya Humanitarian Award, and the Giant Steps Parent Award. Dr. Bias earned an Honorary Doctorate of Education Degree from Anna Maria College, which is located just outside of Boston, MA, in May 1990. Dr.
