He is a subject matter specialist in hostage negotiation and incident command who often talks at hostage negotiation and SWAT conferences around the country.
Derek's interest in interpersonal communication began after he was hired as a detective in a municipal police department's Criminal Investigations Section. He worked as a detective, supervisor, and finally commander of serious crimes in the Criminal Investigations Section for the entirety of his law enforcement career.
