Debra Anne Haaland, a Native American and member of the Democratic Party, presently serves as the 54th United States Secretary of the Interior. Before this role, she served as the U.S. representative for New Mexico's 1st congressional district from 2019 to 2021 and as chair of the New Mexico Democratic Party from 2015 to 2017.
Most of Albuquerque and its suburbs were included in Haaland's congressional district. Along with Sharice Davids, she made history as one of the first two Native American women to be elected to the U.S. Congress. Haaland is known for her progressive political views, supporting initiatives like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.
