Danny Rensch is an American International Master in chess, a renowned commentator, event organizer, and co-founder and Chief Chess Officer of Chess.com. Raised in a cult, he endured psychological manipulation, physical abuse, and separation from his mother, finding solace in chess at age 10 after playing with his grandfather and watching “Searching for Bobby Fischer”.

This "saved his life," as detailed in his 2025 memoir “Dark Squares: How Chess Saved My Life”. A prodigy, Rensch won the 1998 U.S. Elementary National Championship and became Arizona's youngest National Master at 14. He claimed the 2000 Junior High National Championship and tied for first in the 2004 National High School Championship, defeating future grandmaster Aleksandr Lenderman.
