Craig Fehrman is a journalist, historian, and author best known for his books on American history and the presidency. His first major work, “Author in Chief: The Untold Story of Our Presidents and the Books They Wrote” (2020), explores the literary lives of U.S. presidents and earned praise from The Wall Street Journal as one of the best recent books on the presidency. The work also won the 2022 Indiana Authors Award. His second book, “This Vast Enterprise: A New History of Lewis & Clark” (2026), is a revisionist account of the famous expedition and debuted as a New York Times bestseller. Fehrman has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other outlets, and has appeared on PBS NewsHour and NPR. He graduated from the University of Southern Indiana, completed graduate work at Yale, and now lives in Bloomington, where he serves as an adjunct instructor at Indiana University’s Media School.
