Condoleezza Rice is an American diplomat, political scientist, and academic. She served as the 66th U.S. Secretary of State (2005–2009) under President George W. Bush, becoming the first African American woman to hold that role and the first female National Security Advisor (2001–2005). She shaped U.S. foreign policy during the post-9/11 era, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and advocated "transformational diplomacy." A Republican, Rice earned degrees from the University of Denver (BA, PhD) and Notre Dame (MA). She was Stanford University's provost (1993–1999), the first woman and African American in that position.
