Christopher Pissarides Biography

Sir Christopher Antoniou Pissarides is an economist, a professor of economics and political science at the London School of Economics, and the chair of the National Economy Council of the Republic of Cyprus. His study focuses on macroeconomic themes such as labor, economic growth, and economic policy. In 2010, he shared the Nobel Prize in Economics with Peter A. Diamond and Dale Mortensen for their work on market analysis using the idea of search frictions. Pissarides focuses on labor market economics and the impact of economic volatility, growth, and structural change on employment. He also studies monetary and fiscal policy, particularly as it relates to European integration and the Eurozone's issues. He has published widely in professional publications, and his book Equilibrium Unemployment Theory is a well-known reference in the field of unemployment economics, having been translated into several languages. Papers on the economy of the United Kingdom, Europe, and other members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development are among his other published works. Pissarides was born in Cyprus and came to the United Kingdom to study economics at the University of Essex and the London School of Economics. He was the first European economist to receive the IZA Prize in Labor Economics in 2005, which he shared with his American partner Dale Mortensen. From 2000 until 2007, he served as an external member of the Cyprus Monetary Policy Committee, which oversaw the country's successful adoption of the euro. He has served on the important European Employment Task Force and has advised the World Bank, the European Commission, the Bank of England, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development on employment policy and other labor matters. In 2011, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Republic of Cyprus, the country's highest honor, and he presided over the European Economic Association. Fellowships of the British Academy, the Academy of Athens, the Academy of Europe, the Econometric Society, the Society of Labor Economists, and others are among his numerous accolades. He is also a lifelong honorary member of the American Economic Association and has received honorary doctorates from a number of universities, including the University of Essex, the Athens University of Economics, and the University of Cyprus. Christopher Pissarides spent a year at Harvard, Princeton, and the University of California-Berkeley. Also is now the Laiki Professor of European Studies at the University of Cyprus, and he visits the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on a regular basis, where he is the Helmut and Anna Pao Sohmen Professor-at-Large at the Institute of Advanced Studies.
