Dr. Charity Dean, MD, MPH & TM, is an American public health physician renowned for her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and for her warnings about its severity early in 2020. Raised in rural Oregon, she earned a B.S. in Microbiology from Oregon State University, followed by an M.D.
and a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from Tulane University. She served as Public Health Officer for Santa Barbara County (2014–2018), managing outbreaks such as tuberculosis and meningitis, and then as Assistant Director of the California Department of Public Health (2018–2020), where she co-chaired the state's COVID-19 Testing Task Force.
