Carlotta Walls LaNier is an American civil rights activist, best known as one of the “Little Rock Nine”, a group of African American students who integrated Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas in 1957, following the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education, which ruled against school segregation. Hailing from Little Rock, she enrolled at the age of 14, enduring intense harassment and violence from white segregationists while escorted by federal troops due to resistance from local authorities and mobs.
She graduated from Central High in 1960, later earning a degree from Colorado State College. She authored “A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School” (2009), detailing her experiences as a foundational figure of The Civil Rights Movement.
