Brian Broome Biography

Brian Broome is an American memoirist, poet, and screenwriter celebrated for his debut memoir, “Punch Me Up to the Gods” (2021). The memoir won the 2021 Kirkus Prize for Nonfiction, the 2022 Lambda Literary Award for Gay Memoir, the Publishing Triangle Randy Shilts Award, and was a New York Times Editor’s Pick and Stonewall Honor Book. Broome, a contributing columnist for The Washington Post, has also published in Poets and Writers and Medium. He earned a BFA from Chatham University and an MFA from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a K. Leroy Irvis Fellow and taught writing. His short film “Garbage” won the Audience Choice Award at the Cortada Short Film Festival. A 2022 Writer in Residence at St. Mary’s College, he now teaches at West Virginia University.
