Avril Haines is an American lawyer and intelligence official who served as the seventh Director of National Intelligence (DNI) from 2021 to 2025 under President Biden, making her the first woman to hold the role. Haines studied physics at the University of Chicago and earned a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
Her career began in international law, including roles at the Hague Conference and as a State Department legal adviser (2003–2010). In the Obama administration, she was Deputy Counsel for National Security Affairs, Legal Adviser to the NSC, Deputy CIA Director (2013–2017), and Principal Deputy National Security Advisor.
