Ashish Jha Biography

Ashish K. Jha, M.D., M.P.H., a practicing physician, is a global authority on pandemic preparedness and response, as well as health policy analysis and practice. He has pioneered Ebola studies and is now leading national and international study of critical problems and consulting state and federal officials as part of the COVID-19 response. Dr. Jha is a regular consultant to a variety of public media and has written over 200 original research papers in respected journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the BMJ. He has conducted comprehensive studies into how to increase the quality and lower the cost of health care, with a particular emphasis on the effect of public health policies both domestically and globally. Dr. Jha began his tenure as Dean of Brown University's School of Public Health on September 1. Dr. Jha has been a member of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health faculty since 2004 and of Harvard Medical School faculty since 2005. From 2014 to September 2020, he served as the Faculty Director of the Harvard Global Health Institute. He's done extensive research into ways to improve the quality and lower the cost of health care, with a focus on the impact of public health policy both at home and abroad. On September 1, Dr. Jha took over as Dean of Brown University's School of Public Health. Since 2004, Dr. Jha has been a member of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health faculty, and since 2005, he has been a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty. He was the Faculty Director of the Harvard Global Health Institute from 2014 to September 2020. In 1997, he earned his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and later went on to the University of California, San Francisco, to study as an Internal Medicine resident. He went back to Boston to finish his General Medicine residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He graduated from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health with a Master in Public Health degree in 2004. In 2013, he was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine.
