He is also a practicing internal medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and a National Bureau of Economic Research faculty research fellow. Born in the United States to Indian immigrant parents, Jena graduated from MIT with degrees in economics and biology, earned an M.D. and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago, and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Jena’s work focuses on health economics and policy, using natural experiments to explore physician behavior, medical malpractice, healthcare productivity, and medical innovation.
