Alejandro Mayorkas is an attorney and former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security. Born in Havana, Cuba, Mayorkas became the first Latino immigrant to hold the position as appointed by President Joe Biden. His family fled communist Cuba in the 1960s to Los Angeles, California, where he was raised. He earned a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a J.D. from Loyola Law School.

He served as U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California for thirteen years and then at the federal level as Deputy of Homeland Security and Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under President Obama. He is notably known for architecting the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
