Ziya Tong co-hosts Daily Planet, a popular science program on the Discovery Channel. When Tong was 11, her family relocated from Hong Kong to Canada. She earned a B.A. in psychology and sociology from the University of British Columbia. She majored in psychology and received an M.S. in communications from McGill University.
After graduating from college, she worked for Orientation Global Networks in New York as a reporter and senior producer. In this role, she traveled to numerous exotic islands and promoted the attractions of locations like New Caledonia, Bedarra Island, and Fiji.
