Human rights advocate and former Charlie Hebdo columnist Zineb El Rhazoui is a Frenchman of Moroccan descent. In 2010, the Moroccan government forbade the independent newspaper Le Journal Hebdomadaire, which she contributed to with various pieces about religious minorities. Prior to joining Charlie Hebdo in 2011, she co-founded the pro-democracy and pro-secular MALI campaign.
El Rhazoui was ultimately driven into exile in Slovenia by the Moroccan government after being detained three times. In 2013, she and the murdered Charlie Hebdo editor Stéphane Charbonnier co-wrote the comic book "The Life of Mohamed."
