Zhang Xin Biography

Zhang Xin is renowned for her limitless imagination and love of both building and art. She has received several important international accolades for her work as an inventive businesswoman and a sponsor of some of China's most avant-garde architecture. She is in charge of conceptualizing SOHO China's development projects. Ms. Zhang, who was born in Beijing in 1965, relocated to Hong Kong at the age of 14. Later, she traveled to England to attend the University of Sussex to study economics. She received a Master's in Development Economics from Cambridge University in 1992. Later, she relocated to Wall Street where she worked for Travelers Group and Goldman Sachs before going back to her native Beijing in late 1995 to launch her own real estate business. Zhang Xin and her husband Pan Shiyi developed the idea of SOHO (Small Office Home Office) in their first project SOHO New Town to provide adaptable and multi-functional spaces for urban young professionals and their businesses. They were inspired by the emergence of the internet, the rapid growth of small and medium-sized businesses, and their need for combined living and working spaces. The project's sales totaled roughly RMB 4 billion, and it was Beijing's top-selling project in both 1999 and 2000.
