Zeresenay Alemseged, a paleoanthropologist, researches the history of humans. The 3.3 million-year-old bones of Selam, a 3-year-old female of the species Australopithecus afarensis, were found by him as part of his Dikika Research Project (DRP) in Ethiopia's Afar desert. She belongs to the same species as Lucy, who was found nearby in 1974.

Alemseged is looking for the points in time when humans and apes separated by examining Selam's little bones. Selam, for example, may have had shoulders like apes suited for climbing trees, but her legs were slanted for upright walking.
