Zeljko Ivanek Biography

In order for Zeljko Ivanek's father to complete his Ph.D. studies in electrical engineering at Stanford University, his family migrated to the US in 1960. After being accepted to The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he continued to develop his love for acting and spent the summers of 1978–1980 perfecting his stage presence in productions including Hay Fever and The Front Page at the Williamstown Theater Festival. Ivanek made a terrifying impact in his early role as a psychic murderer in the 1982 thriller The Sender, and further outstanding performances in Mass Appeal (1984) and the AIDS drama Our Sons (1991) kept hopes high for the budding star. The classically trained actor found the transition from stage to television to be intimidating at first, but as he acclimated to the tempo difference, he did very well. Ivanek also began his six-year run as Governor James Devlin on HBO's popular series Oz at this time. In addition to acting in Dancer in the Dark (2000), noteworthy appearances on The Practice and The West Wing kept television fans hooked to their sets. Hannibal (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), Unfaithful (2002), and Dogville (2003).
