Zainab Salbi describes growing up in Saddam Hussein's close circle in her novel Hidden in Plain Sight: Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam Hussein. Her father was Saddam's personal pilot. She fled Iraq for an arranged marriage in the United States, which swiftly devolved into yet another type of oppression.
When she learned of the rape and detention camps in Bosnia in 1993, she felt she couldn't stay silent any longer. Salbi formed Women for Women International to assist women who are victims of conflict in whatever way, from those who have been physically damaged to those who are impoverished as a result of war and turmoil.
