Zaila Avant-garde (born February 9, 2007) is a juggler, basketball player, and speller from the United States. She was awarded the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2021. She is the very 1st African-American finalist and the 2nd Black winner, following Jamaica's Jody-Anne Maxwell. Avant-garde, the daughter of Jawara Spacetime, was born on February 9, 2007 in Harvey, Louisiana.
He picked her surname as a tribute to John Coltrane.Her role models include Malala Yousafzai, Coco Guaff, and, Serena Williams. Steph Curry, Diana Taurasi, James Harden, Kevin Durant, as well as Maya Moore are among her basketball idols. Avant-garde Spelling Bee advanced to the nationals in the 2019 Bee.
