Yusuf was raised in Johannesburg, where he went to Crawford College for high school and Sacred Heart College for primary school.
Yusuf was chosen as Johannesburg's Junior Mayor at Crawford. Out of the roughly 110000 students who sat the matriculation examinations in Gauteng that year, Yusuf placed eighth on his matric tests. Yusuf afterward attended Harvard, where he earned his economics degree with honours in 2005.
