The CEO of the Awethu Project is Yusuf, a mixed-race South African who is 27 years old. Yusuf was raised in Johannesburg, where he went to Crawford College for high school and Sacred Heart College for primary school. Yusuf was chosen as Johannesburg's Junior Mayor at Crawford. Out of the roughly 110000 students who sat the matriculation examinations in Gauteng that year, Yusuf placed eighth on his matric tests. Yusuf afterward attended Harvard, where he earned his economics degree with honours in 2005. Before enrolling at Oxford University as a South Africa-at-Large Rhodes Scholar, Yusuf first worked in Alternative Investments for Credit Suisse in New York and Zurich. In July 2009, Yusuf graduated from Oxford with an MSc in Financial Economics and an MSc in African Studies. Additionally, Yusuf founded two substantial not-for-profit organisations, one of which was funded by the Gates Foundation and the other by the World Bank. Yusuf has also devoted a significant amount of his life to sports, and he has competed for South Africa in the modern pentathlon, tennis, and cricket in Johannesburg and Gauteng.
