Yuan Longping Biography

Yuan was born in the Chinese capital of Beijing in 1930. In 1953, he received his bachelor's degree in agriculture from the Southwest Agriculture Institute and began teaching at an agriculture school in Anjiang, Hunan Province. He came up with the idea of hybridizing rice in the 1960s when China was suffering from an unparalleled famine brought on by natural calamities and poor policy. Yuan has committed himself to the research and creation of a superior rice breed since then. He came upon a natural hybrid rice plant in 1964 that had evident benefits over others. Encouraged, he continued to research the characteristics of this specific variety. The major challenge at the time was that there was no known way to mass-produce hybrid rice, which Yuan set out to overcome. Yuan developed his notion of exploiting naturally altered male-sterile rice individuals for the establishment of reproductive hybrid rice species in 1964, and he found a few such male-sterile rice individuals that he believed could be employed for his study in two years. His notion was proven practicable in subsequent studies, which was his most significant contribution to hybrid rice. Yuan then proceeded to solve the following issues. After the first experimental hybrid rice species created failed to outperform ordinary rice, Yuan proposed crossbreeding rice with a distant relative: wild rice. In 1970, he discovered an essential wild rice species that he required to develop high-yield hybrid rice varieties. He was ultimately able to construct a thorough procedure for breeding and reproducing high-yield hybrid rice species in 1973, working with others. The next year, they were successful in cultivating a hybrid rice variety with several benefits. It produced 20% more per unit than ordinary rice, putting China on top of the world in rice production. He was called the "Father of Hybrid Rice" as a result of this feat. Currently, Yuan Longping's hybrid rice species are grown in up to 50% of China's total rice fields, yielding 60% of the country's rice production. Due to Yuan's efforts, China's total rice output increased from 5.69 billion tonnes in 1950 to 19.47 billion tonnes last year, an increase of almost 300 billion kg in the previous two decades. The increase in annual production is enough to feed 60 million people. The Super Rice Yuan is currently developing and boasts yields that are 30% greater than regular rice. In 1999, Yongsheng County in Yunnan Province set a new record harvest of 17,055 kilos per acre.
