Yuan was born in the Chinese capital of Beijing in 1930. In 1953, he received his bachelor's degree in agriculture from the Southwest Agriculture Institute and began teaching at an agriculture school in Anjiang, Hunan Province.
He came up with the idea of hybridizing rice in the 1960s when China was suffering from an unparalleled famine brought on by natural calamities and poor policy. Yuan has committed himself to the research and creation of a superior rice breed since then. He came upon a natural hybrid rice plant in 1964 that had evident benefits over others.
