Yolanda Wisher Biography

Author and spoken word curator Yolanda Wisher works at Philadelphia Contemporary. Wisher is the co-editor of Peace is a Haiku Song and the author of Monk Eats an Afro. Wisher and her band The Afroeaters offer a distinctive fusion of poetry and song, and her writing has appeared in a number of publications, such as Gathering Ground: A Reader Celebrating Cave Canems First Decade. BETTER Magazine CBC Radio, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Contemporary Black Canvas, Radio Times, PoetryNOW, and Ploughshares. a Hedgebrook Writer-in-Residence and Pew Fellow Wisher was chosen as Montgomery County, Pennsylvania's first poet laureate in 1999 and Philadelphia's third poet laureate in 2016. She spent ten years as a high school English teacher, worked as Philadelphia Mural Arts' Director of Art Education, and organized and oversaw the Germantown Poetry and Outbound Poetry Festivals. Together with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and the US Department of Arts & Culture, Wisher has also organized seminars and events. She served as the University of Pennsylvania's 2017–2018 CPCW Fellow in Poetics and Poetic Practice, and she is presently Philadelphia Contemporary's Curator of Spoken Word.
