She was born in Paris, and in 1966, she relocated to Washington, D.C., with her family. Smith experienced voice-related bullying when she was younger. She graduated from theatre school in 1982 and started working as a professional actor. In 1984, she relocated to New York City and made her Broadway debut in The Real Thing.
The Legend of Billie Jean and Maximum Overdrive followed her feature debut in 1985's Heaven Help Us. In 1986, she relocated to Los Angeles, California, and was given a recurring part in Brothers. She gave an audition for a part in a run of Simpson family-themed animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987.
