Yalitza Aparicio Biography

Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio Martnez made her acting debut in Alfonso Cuarón's 2018 drama Roma as Cleo, which led to her being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She was included among the top 100 world influencers by Time magazine in 2019. Aparicio was born in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, on December 11, 1993. Her father is Mixtec and her mother is Triqui, and both of her parents are of indigenous descent. She had to learn the Mixtec language for her role in Roma even though she is not fluent in it. A single mother who also worked as a maid reared Aparicio. While already possessing a degree in early childhood education, she pursued a degree in preschool education instead of receiving formal training in acting. Following Salma Hayek for her performance in the 2002 film Frida, Aparicio is the second Mexican woman, the fourth Latina, and the first Indigenous American woman to get an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. In the Best Supporting Actress category, three other Mexican women have received nominations: Katy Jurado in 1954 for Broken Lance; Adriana Barraza in 2006 for Babel; and Marina de Tavira in 2018 for Roma. Along with being recognized by Time and The New York Times, she has also received nominations in the same category from the Chicago Film Critics Association, the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, the Hollywood Film Awards, the Gotham Awards, the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, the Satellite Awards, and the Women Film Critics Circle.
