On December 25, 2002, Xu Wenli landed in the US. Since then, he has been meeting with the media and spending time with his wife and daughter. Initially detained during the 1979–81 Democracy Wall movement was Wenli. He then assisted in the founding of the influential dissident journal April Fifth Forum, and in November 1979, he hung a poster on the Democracy Wall. He drafted a twenty-point list of recommendations for the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, published a private newsletter, conducted numerous interviews with foreign journalists and television stations, and published a number of articles in Hong Kong using a pseudonym. He was able to sneak out a thorough description of his arrest, trial, and general treatment in jail, including his 200 interrogator sessions, in the late 1985 publication titled My Defense Statement.
