Woody Allen is an actor, writer, director, comedian, and playwright from the United States, with a career spanning more than 50 years. In the 1950s, he worked as a comedy writer, creating jokes and television scripts, as well as releasing multiple collections of short humor pieces.
Allen began doing stand-up comedy in the early 1960s, focusing on monologues rather than typical jokes. He established the reputation of an anxious, intelligent, fretful nebbish as a comic, which he claims is nothing like his real-life demeanor. Allen was named fourth on Comedy Central's list of the 100 best stand-up comedians in 2004, and third in a UK poll.
