William Poole Ph.D. Biography

As of autumn 2008, William Poole served as the University of Delaware's Distinguished Scholar in Residence in addition to being a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and senior advisor to Merk Investments. Prior to joining Cato Poole, he served as the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis' president and chief executive officer. He oversaw operations at the bank's St. Louis headquarters as well as its Little Rock, Louisville, and Memphis locations. He also represented the Bank on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which is the Federal Reserve's top decision-making body for monetary policy. Prior to that, Poole served as Brown University's Herbert H. Goldberger Professor of Economics. He taught at Johns Hopkins University from 1963 to 1969 and at Brown University from 1974 to 1998. He worked as a senior economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington between these two academic jobs. From 1982 to 1985, he served as a member of the first Reagan administration's Council of Economic Advisers.
