As of autumn 2008, William Poole served as the University of Delaware's Distinguished Scholar in Residence in addition to being a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and senior advisor to Merk Investments. Prior to joining Cato Poole, he served as the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis' president and chief executive officer. He oversaw operations at the bank's St.

Prior to that, Poole served as Brown University's Herbert H. Goldberger Professor of Economics.
