William Petersen and his wife Joanne dropped out of school in 1974, and William then followed a theatre professor to the Basque Country to train as a Shakespearean actor. Petersen was fascinated by Basque culture, learned Euskera, the language of the Basques, and gave his daughter the name Maite, which means love in Basque.
After primary production was over, he made every effort to get rid of Will Graham since his role in Manhunter was so emotionally taxing. Petersen turned down a role in Oliver Stone's Platoon because it would have kept him in the Philippines and away from his family, a decision that may be indicative of his career choices.
