William Petersen and his wife Joanne dropped out of school in 1974, and William then followed a theatre professor to the Basque Country to train as a Shakespearean actor. Petersen was fascinated by Basque culture, learned Euskera, the language of the Basques, and gave his daughter the name Maite, which means love in Basque. After primary production was over, he made every effort to get rid of Will Graham since his role in Manhunter was so emotionally taxing. Petersen turned down a role in Oliver Stone's Platoon because it would have kept him in the Philippines and away from his family, a decision that may be indicative of his career choices. He worked on the 1987 made-for-TV film Long Gone instead. To Live and Die in L.A., a 1985 film, Petersen momentarily appears bare-faced in front. Petersen declined the chance to play Henry Hill in the film Goodfellas. Since 2000, Petersen's role as Dr. Gil Grissom on the CBS crime thriller CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has brought him the most notoriety. In June 2003, Petersen wed his longtime lover Gina Cirone. From his first marriage, he has a daughter named Maite who gave birth to Mazrik William in October 2003.
