Scottish philosopher William MacAskill is credited with helping to start the effective altruism movement. He is a professor of philosophy at Lincoln College Oxford as of August 2015, and he is now a research fellow in philosophy at Emmanuel College Cambridge. Giving What We Can and 80000 Hours are two charitable organizations that MacAskill started.
$400 million has been pledged to charity over the lifetimes of the NGOs combined. 2014 saw considerable criticism of the ice bucket challenge from MacAskill. It was revealed in 2015 that Penguin will release MacAskill's debut book, Doing Good Better, which is founded on the ideas of effective altruism.
