Landay worked as an assistant district attorney in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, for seven years before he turned to write. He graduated from Boston College Law School and Yale University. The British Crime Writers Association recognized his first book, Mission Flats, as the best debut crime novel of 2003 by awarding it the John Creasey Dagger (now known as the New Blood Dagger). His second book, The Strangler, was a top pick for crime fiction in the Los Angeles Times and was nominated for the Strand Magazine Critics Award for 2007's best crime novel. Defending Jacob, Landay's third book, was published in January 2012. The reviews were favorable, and it quickly rose to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Defending Jacob was nominated for many prizes and won the Strand Magazine Critics Award for best mystery book of 2012.
