At Harvard University, William Julius Wilson holds the Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professorship. He holds the highest professional designation available to a Harvard faculty member—one of just 19 University Professors. Wilson taught sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst after earning his Ph.D.
from Washington State University in 1966, and then he joined the University of Chicago faculty in 1972. He was named the Lucy Flower University Professor and the Center for the Study of Urban Inequality's director at the University of Chicago in 1990. He started working there as a professor in July 1996.
