William Adams received a philosophy undergraduate degree from Colorado College and a doctorate in the history of consciousness from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He serves as the National Endowment for the Humanities' eleventh chairman. Before starting his career in higher education, he was a Fulbright Scholar who studied in France.
He was then hired to teach political philosophy at Santa Clara University in California and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Adams' three years of military duty, including one year spent in Vietnam, caused a break in his official schooling.
