William Barnett is an American organizational theorist and the Thomas M. Siebel Professor of Business Leadership, Strategy, and Organizations at Stanford Graduate School of Business. He chairs the Department of Environmental Social Sciences at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and directs the Stanford Initiative on Business and Environmental Sustainability. His research focuses on competition, organizational evolution, and sustainability.

His book “The Red Queen Among Organizations” (2008) examines how competitiveness evolves in industries like computing and banking. He holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and has been at Stanford since 1991. He also leads the Stanford Executive Program and has shifted his research toward environmental sustainability, studying how organizations adapt to climate change.
