After working with Maggie Smith and Laurence Olivier at the National Theatre of Great Britain in 1964, he returned to Montreal the following year to take over as the Artistic Director of the National Theatre School of Canada. After serving as the inaugural Artistic Director of the Festival Lennoxville in Lennoxville, Quebec, and directing in other provincial theatres, a successful career in Canada ensued. He resumed performing in the late 1970s, focusing mostly on Toronto, until relocating to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1985, all the while continuing to direct and educate.
