Will Hayden, the company's founder, is the driving force behind Red Jacket Firearms. His early introduction to weapons came from his family, who were rural folks with a shotgun who occasionally hunted. He grew up in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana region. Will was an inquisitive young man who devoured all he could about history and combat. This prompted him to begin fiddling with firearms, and by the age of 17, Will had discovered that making weapons was an excellent way to keep out of trouble. As Will puts it, I desired things I couldn't afford, so he created a method to get them. Will felt he needed to be his own boss and unlock his inner entrepreneur after a six-year service in the Marine Corps in the early 1980s. He launched a modest construction and refrigeration business, but weapons were always on his mind. Will decided to renovate the front of the building and create an Army Surplus and Firearms Store as a side business. Red Jacket Firearms was established as a sideline that rapidly grew into a full-time business. The first large order for Red Jacket came in 1999 when he built 20 AK-47s for an Arizona distributor. Will requested that his constructions be advertised as Proudly Manufactured by Red Jacket in exchange for a discount on the price. Atlantic Firearms, a well-known dealer and distributor, took notice of the banner, and business flourished. Stephanie, Will's daughter, joined the company as a business manager and partner in 2003. The cooperation has helped Red Jacket maintain its position as the country's most distinctive weapons company. Will has been involved in the reenactment scene for 20 years and is a history buff. For him, the power of a weapon comes from the fact that he is wielding a piece of history. Will describes himself as a dissatisfied artist who prefers to work with weapons-grade steel. He enjoys taking his crew on road trips and his daughter backcountry trekking and elk hunting when he's not in front of the Sons of Guns cameras.
