Benitez, a teenage prodigy mentored by his father Gregorio Benitez, came from one of Puerto Rico's most famous boxing families, with his brothers Frankie and Gregory Benitez also being prominent contenders in the 1970s. Clara Benitez, their mother, was in charge of the Benitez troop. Wilfredo was dubbed "The Radar" as a child.
He learned to fight by watching his siblings and other local, well-known fighters exercise their talents at a neighborhood boxing gym in New York.
