Undoubtedly one of the most well-known private equity investors in the United States is Wilbur Ross, CEO of WL Ross & Co. LLC. His private equity groups acquired Bethlehem Steel and a number of other insolvent producers, brought them back to life, and then combined them with Mittal Steel for $4.5 billion to become the largest U.S. producer. The largest steel business in the world, ArcelorMittal, still has Mr. Ross on its board of directors. Additionally, he founded and currently leads International Coal Group, the second-largest subprime mortgage servicer in the country, American Home Mortgage Servicing Inc., the largest rail car leasing company in Europe, International Textile Group, the most international American company in that sector, International Auto Components Group, a $4.5 billion producer of instrument panels and other interior components, and Compagnie Europeenne de Wagons Sarl. He serves on the boards of the NYSE-listed Assured Guaranty, BankUnited, and Greenbrier Companies, the Brazilian-listed PLASCAR, and the over-the-counter Sun Bancorp. Prior to purchasing the private equity partnerships of that company in 2000, Mr. Ross spent 24 years as the executive managing director of Rothschild Inc. He serves on the boards of the Yale School of Management, Partnership for New York City, Palm Beach Civic Association, Business Roundtable, Harvard Business School Club of New York, Committee on Capital Markets Regulation, Harvard University Committee on University Resources, British-American Business, Blenheim American Foundation, Palm Beach Preservation Foundation, and Chairman's Council of the U.S.-India Business Council. He oversees both the Palm Beach Firefighters Retirement Fund and the Japan Society. He received a medal from President Kim Dae Jung for his support during Korea's financial crisis, President Clinton nominated him to the U.S.-Russia Investment Fund Board, and he worked as Rudy Giuliani's privatization advisor in New York City. He received the Blue Cloud Award from the China Institute. Formerly, Mr. Ross presided over the National Board of the Smithsonian Institution. Graduate of both Yale University and Harvard Business School, Mr. Ross (with distinction). He is the only individual chosen for induction into both the Turnaround Management Association and Private Equity Halls of Fame.
