In order to construct 350 inexpensive and ecologically friendly houses, he established the Ponchartrain Park Area Association, a non-profit organization, which would let lifelong residents return to their neighborhood and maintain its heritage. Wendell won an NAACP Image Award for his performance in the HBO film "Life Support" starring Queen Latifah. In Spike Lee's documentary "When The Levees Broke," he made an appearance as himself and related his family's experience with loss following Katrina. He appeared in the Disney films "Stay Alive," "Ray," which won an Oscar and was based on the life of Ray Charles, "Hole in One," by Wim Wenders, and "Angst & Alienation in America." The Fighting Temptations, 24 Hour Woman, Brown Sugar, Volcano, Abilene, Bullworth, and Spike Lee's "Get on the Bus" are just a few of Pierce's numerous works. A few more movies in his filmography include "Sleepers," "Waiting to Exhale," "Hackers," "Bye Bye Love," "It Could Happen To You," "Manhattan Murder Mystery," "Malcolm X," "Husbands and Wives," "A Rage in Harlem," "Bonfire of the Vanities," "Casualties of War," "Family Business," "Ishtar," " The independent movie "Bolden" and Taylor Hackford's "Love Ranch," starring Helen Mirren, will both be released in 2010. Pierce has appeared regularly on 'The Weber Show' for NBC, 'The Gregory Hines Show,' 'Maloney,' and 'The Brian Benben Show,' in addition to 'The Wire,' and has appeared in recurring roles on a number of other programs, such as 'Numb3rs,' 'Law & Order,' 'Third Watch,' 'New York Undercover,' and 'I'll Fly A Along with the HBO productions "Strapped" and "Vietnam War Story: The Pass," Pierce has also been in the ABC miniseries "Advocate's Devil," the CBS telefilm "Never Give Up: The Jimmy V Story," the BBC miniseries "With Two Lumps Of Ice," and several more projects. Pierce has received praise for his work in the Kennedy Center's world premiere of "Queenie Pie," and his Broadway stage credits also include "The Piano Lesson," "Serious Money," and "The Boys of Winter." At the Classical Theatre of Harlem, his performance of "The Cherry Orchard" got raving reviews (nominated for a VIV award in the lead actor category). He then sang "Waiting For Godot" as a follow-up (set on a rooftop surrounded by water in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans). The play "Broke-ology," which had its world premiere at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and will be presented at Lincoln Center in New York City in the autumn of 2009, will be Pierce's next project. For his role in "The Wire," Pierce has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Best Actor in a Television Drama three times. He also received the Women's Image Network "WIN" Award and the 2008 Image Award for Best Actor in a Television Movie.
